Lost Crown Care

A loose or missing crown needs assessment, even without pain. Protect the tooth and find out whether the crown can be reused or needs replacement.

If a crown comes off while eating or cleaning your teeth, keep it and contact Excellence Dental in Needham. Tell the team whether the tooth hurts, whether a piece of tooth appears to be inside the crown, and whether the crown was temporary or permanent.

What to do with the crown

Store the crown in a clean container and bring it to your appointment. Avoid chewing on the affected side. Do not use household glue or force the crown back onto the tooth. If it is loose but still attached, avoid repeatedly wiggling it and call for guidance.

When is a lost crown urgent?

Call promptly even if you have no pain. Report severe pain, swelling, bleeding, or an injury so the team can advise on timing. If the problem followed a blow to the mouth, also read our dental trauma guidance.

Recementing or replacing a crown

A missing crown does not always need to be replaced, but it should not simply be glued back without checking the tooth. The dentist will assess whether the crown and remaining tooth can support a reliable repair. Depending on the findings, care may involve recementing the crown, repairing damage, or planning a new restoration.

Our crowns and bridges page explains restoration options. A cracked or broken tooth may require a different approach from an intact tooth with a loose crown.

Arranging the next step

Call to discuss availability before travelling. Bring the recovered crown and explain any recent treatment. For broader urgent-care guidance, visit emergency dental care in Needham.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Can my old crown be put back on?

Sometimes, but the dentist needs to assess the crown, the remaining tooth, and the fit. Damage or decay may mean a repair or replacement is needed.

Does a painless lost crown still need attention?

Yes. The tooth underneath may be vulnerable even without pain. Contact the practice promptly and ask about the appropriate appointment timing.

What should I do with a crown that has fallen out?

Keep it in a clean container and bring it to your appointment. Avoid chewing on the affected side, and tell the practice whether the crown was temporary or permanent and whether any tooth structure appears to have broken with it.

Can I glue my crown back on myself?

Do not use household glue or force a crown back into place. Contact the practice for advice before attempting a temporary repair. The dentist needs to check the tooth and the fit of the crown before deciding whether it can be recemented.

What symptoms should I report when a crown comes off?

Report pain, swelling, bleeding, or an injury, along with when the crown came off. Severe pain or swelling warrants an urgent dental call. If you have difficulty breathing or swallowing or another potentially life-threatening symptom, call 911.
